The National Seal Sanctuary is set in the picturesque Helford Estuary, by the beautiful village of Gweek, in Cornwall. The Sanctuary is a busy rescue centre and has resident Grey Seals, Common Seals, Fur Seals, Patagonian & California Sea Lions and Otters.
eibe play was asked by Kevin Howe of the Fairhursts Design Group, to develop a new adventure play area alongside their new penguin exhibit. Sarah Vine, the Attractions Manager, was keen on the idea of developing a “Pirate-themed” play area. Following detailed conversations and design plans, Pirate’s Bay emerged in the form of an authentic pirate galleon - the eibe Tema Sand Ship, Nina. The ship offers an array of play opportunities with various features such as climbing, hiding and sliding down the pirate’s long walk at the Stern of the Ship. |

David Wallis, eibe’s Playspace consultant said, “This was a challenging project from the start, as the terrain is steep and the space required to accommodate the boat was particularly tight.”
| With some creative landscaping, the mound was re-shaped using some sleepers to give a genuine dock feel to the play space. Sarah Vine commented: “We have noticed that the dwell time between the new penguins’ area and the Pirate Bay play area has considerably increased since investing in the play area.” She also revealed that there had been a notable increase in sales in the sanctuary shop.
